Do you need studio monitor stands?

The answer is, it depends. After you’ve done some research, and you have determined the answer is yes, then take a look at our picks below.

How do I find out if I need monitor stands?

Check out the following articles. These are easily the most comprehensive. I’ve also included a couple of forum discussions which should help you too:

Ultimate Support JSMS70 Speaker Stand (Pair)

With almost 200 reviews averaging near 5-stars on Amazon, Ultimate Support JSMS70 Speaker Stands definitely have the popular vote. They’re durable and are adjustable to accommodate most any monitor type. They even come with different methods of resting on the floor – depending on if you have hard surface floor or carpeting.

Below is a video providing an overview of the stands. Bear in mind, it’s a marketing video from the company, but there are some great closeups of the different pieces, and how they all fit together:

User reviews

One Amazon reviewer noted:

These stands are great. They’re made by Ultimate Support, so they have the same high-quality workmanship and sturdiness that you would expect from a proper Ultimate stand. Yet they are still cheaper than any of the credible alternatives I could find online. (Most places carry “On-Stage Stands” brand, which I absolutely loathe for their less-than-professional build quality.)

The stands are pretty easy and simple to set up and adjust to the right height, but they are extremely sturdy and have these metal pins that you can use to make sure they stay at the right level of adjustment. The platforms have a great soft rubberized grip, so my monitors stay put even if I bump into them when trying to get into the corner of my room behind the stands. Also the platforms can rotate/swivel pretty easily, which is nice for fine-tuning the angle of the speakers, especially when I was first setting them up and needed to experiment a lot to find just the right listening sweet spot.

I use Yamaha HS80M monitors with 8-inch cones, which are fairly big and are actually a little bigger than the platforms of the stands, but the stands have no problem supporting these speakers and I don’t feel anxious about them falling or anything. So you don’t necessarily have to have tiny near-fields to be able to use these stands.

Overall, I would highly recommend these monitor stands. I don’t think you could get a better deal without shelling out significantly more cash to get the actual Ultimate Support name-brand stands.

Another reviewer posted a picture of his stands in action, and said:

These stands are very sturdy. I was honestly a little surprised by how sturdy they were when I got them. I was a little worried because I needed something for my KRK Rockit 8 powered monitors that weigh in at 26.5 pounds apiece. Not a problem. With the safety pin in place I don’t have to worry about these holding the weight.

Conclusion

There are plenty of other monitor stands out there, but not too many in this price range that will handle most anything you throw at it.

Happy recording!

“It’s not so much the equipment as how you use it. I’ve heard people with really cheap studios do great recordings.” —Frank Gambale
