The Musician's Gear Deluxe Padded Piano Bench is the best one for most people. It is very well built, doesn't creak, and looks rather attractive. It's adjustable to accommodate different sized players, with a comfortable faux-leather upholstered top. If you want a bench that will stand the test of time in your studio, this is the one to get.
Let’s be honest, piano benches end up being used for much more than just piano benches. I play guitar and record vocals while sitting on it. I use it as step stool at times to reach lights and shelves. It also gets used as a storage bench sometimes, piled with boxes during spring cleaning or moving.
After all that (whew!), I still want a bench that:
Our pick matches all that criteria. Read on for more information, including some alternate picks which may interest you.
The washers have to be put on the bench correctly. Unfortunately the instructions don’t specify very well, which way correct is. Keep that in mind if you hear any creaking. The good news is, everyone says once they are put on correctly it is completely silent, like the one I tried.
If you want a simple folding black keyboard bench for travel, gigs, practice, you have lots of options. Out of them, On Stage’s KT7800 Plus Padded Keyboard Bench is probably the best for the budget price. These are reliable enough to be recommended by many music schools, like this reviewer noted:
I have purchased many piano benches in my lifetime because I own a music school. […] This piano bench is very comfortable and I don’t get as tired when I sit on it when I am teaching piano for 4 to 6 hours/day. I would purchase another one when needed and I recommend this model to my students.
If you are a frequent visitor to this site, you know we prefer substance over style with our music gear picks. However, a piano bench is one of those things in which you may want to give consideration to style.
I was happy to learn that CPS Imports is one of the leaders in piano benches (who knew there was such a thing!). Turns out I’ve sat on many of their benches over the years. Their corporate site is here, where they occasionally run specials. Their Amazon shop is here, which makes it real easy to get one delivered.
If you want to get something that complements your living room decor, and want something silent and comfortable, many of CPS Import’s models may be a good move.

“It’s not so much the equipment as how you use it. I’ve heard people with really cheap studios do great recordings.” —Frank Gambale
